KF (20) attended the HTL in Vienna Ottakring, BK broke off his HTL career, did auxiliary jobs and became unemployed. The two are said to have radicalized in the Melit Ibrahim Mosque in Vienna Ottakring. The house of prayer was frequented by radical Islamist people who reject democratic institutions of the “kuffar”, Mayer describes. This refers to the indictment for a trial that the two of them were brought in spring 2019. The two had taken a liking to the ideology of the Islamic State (IS), made contact with IS fighters in Syria and Iraq via social media such as Telegram, and finally tried to join the terrorist organization. For this, BK and KF were sentenced to 22 months in prison. At the time, BK swore allegiance to IS terrorist chief Al-Baghdadi, evidence shows. Mayer and the prosecution nevertheless saw KF as the driving force behind the multiple failed exit plans, first to Afghanistan and then to Syria. They were arrested in September 2018.
