The attack took place at a Catholic church in Burkina Faso north. Senior church officials said 15 people were killed and 2 others injured as a result of this attack.
“We inform you of the terrorist attack, the Catholic community became victims in the village of Essakane today, February 25, when they were gathering for Sunday worship,” said the Vicar of Dori Diocese, Jean-Pierre Sawadogo, in a statement as reported by AFP, Monday ( 2/26/2024).
“Temporary victims are 15 people killed and two people injured,” he added.
Sawadogo condemned the attack. He also called for peace and security in Burkina Faso.
“Those who continue to cause death and destruction in our country,” he said.
The incident is just the latest in a series of atrocities alleged to have been carried out by jihadist groups active in the region, some of which targeted Christian churches while others involved the kidnapping of priests.
Burkina Faso is part of the vast Sahel region, which has been battling rising violent extremism since Libya’s civil war in 2011, which was followed by Islamist takeover of northern Mali in 2012.
The jihadist insurgency has spread to Burkina Faso and Niger since 2015.
