Spain is considering reducing the validity of driving licenses from 10 to 5 years after the age of 65 for the driver and from 5 to 2 years after reaching the age of 70. The aim is to avoid road accidents caused by adult drivers.
In 2020, 26% of those killed in road accidents are drivers over 65, according to statistics from the Ministry of Interior. And although they are only 11 out of 100 of all licensed car drivers in Spain, the Directorate-General for Traffic has opened a debate to increase control over older drivers.
According to its director Pere Navarro, the goal is to have no drivers who do not meet the necessary driving skills such as speed of reflexes and good eyesight.
However, according to the director of the National Association of Instructors, Roberto Ramos, not all 65-year-old drivers can be put under a common denominator because their health and mental condition are different, so an individual approach to each of them is needed.
Most proposals are to return the provisions in force until 2009, to renew the driver’s license every 2 years after 70 years and every one after 80 years, in order to remove incapacitated drivers.
