Terrifying Descent: United Airlines flight plummets 8,000 meters in 10 minutes

Ten minutes of pure terror, a short period of time that must have seemed infinite to the passengers of a United Airlines flight departing from the United States and heading to Rome, which “plummeted” approximately 8 thousand meters in ten minutes and was forced to turn around the route back to the New Jersey airport. As reported by the US media, the Boeing took off last Wednesday from Newark Liberty International Airport, in New Jersey, but a few minutes after departure, the aircraft experienced some problems and began its terrifying descent towards the ground. The plane suddenly lost altitude by more than 28 thousand feet, or about 8,500 meters, in just ten minutes, going from an altitude of 11 thousand feet to less than 3 thousand.

Panic broke out on board, but fortunately, after 10 interminable minutes of free descent, the situation returned under control and the pilot managed to return to New Jersey for an emergency landing. “There was a problem with the pressurization of the cabin, it went back – said the airline spokesperson – the 270 passengers and 14 crew members were transferred to another aircraft and reached Italy”. Problems also confirmed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the US body that regulates flights: “The plane had a pressurization problem”.

In these cases, it is the pilots themselves who, as a precaution, choose to descend: this is a procedure foreseen in the presence of pressurization problems. Since the pressure inside the plane is artificially maintained at levels equal to those between 1,500 and 2,500 meters above sea level, in the event of malfunctions the pilots physically descend to an altitude of 1,500-2,500 meters so as to allow passengers to breathe easily even with the faulty system.
