Confused time. No official announcement, as was a good tradition. The old-new king is with a national team in Lublin, Poland, where Estonia had to take refuge due to a pandemic. The coronation took place again only symbolically at a distance.

“The year 2020 was beautiful for me, but at the same time difficult in terms of football and life,” emphasizes 26-year-old Tomáš Souček in an interview with the media after the announcement of the survey results.

Tomáš Souček has had the life’s most difficult season in his career. Will he end her with a wedding?

“Actually, I spent the whole year, except for a few days in the summer, in England with my girls, my wife Natalia and my daughter Terezka. Yes, we enjoyed it, but sometimes it was hard because we were in a foreign and new environment on our own. So I would like to thank them very much for the conditions they create and give me strength. I have to thank them in particular for what 2020 looked like. And then, of course, the family that raised me and the teammates and coaches who helped me in my career. “

You are the Footballer of the Year 2020. How does that sound to you?

I really appreciate it. The Footballer of the Year poll is the biggest individual award in our country and it is a great honor for me to win it for the second time in a row. I’ve always been the one who values team awards more, but the team is made up of individuals. I am very glad that people voted for me and thank them.

Do you value more this year’s or last year’s victory?

Probably the second one, this year. The year 2020 was terribly difficult – a global pandemic, a huge life change, moving abroad, far from my loved ones … Sometimes it was difficult, and that is why I appreciate this year’s award a little more.

The year 2020 was also a turning point for you in that you moved to West Ham. Were you surprised at how well you started in the Premier League?

I take the whole year very positively. For the first time I live abroad and I had to get used to a lot of things – language, a new group, a foreign city … We were far from loved ones who could not even visit us because of the coronavirus. I tried to work on everything and I’m glad how it came out all year. I’m very happy with how it turned out in terms of football.

You and West Ham are fighting for European cups. What are your ambitions before the rest of the season?

It may sound like a cliché, but you really need to go from match to match. And at the end the table will show our location. We are not a team that should announce that it only wants to join the Champions League. But the number of matches will decrease and the more points we make, the better. We definitely want to go to the European Cups, but we will only watch the next matches and see what it will be enough for.

The national team won its group in the League of Nations last year. How much do you value this success?

Lots of! It can be seen that some work has been done. The national team made a very good team and we deservedly advanced among the best in the League of Nations. The reward for us will be that we will be able to meet the very best in the next year.

Do you feel that the representation is increasing in performance?

Yes, I feel the team grow. I’m very happy. I was looking forward to last year’s EURO because we could have a strong team. And when it has moved a year, maybe it can still help us, because we will be a little further and even stronger again. I believe that we will also show this in the qualification for the World Cup.

With what ambitions will the Czech team go to the June EURO?

We definitely want to move out of the group. That is the first goal. Of course, I really wish it wouldn’t end in a process, but then it would be a lure. Each of us would rather take a vacation if we stay at the EURO for as long as possible.

How big of a attraction is the World Cup?

Even bigger than the EURO. Literally the whole world will be watching the tournament. We have to prepare for the first match with Estonia. The opening meeting can help us a lot in our ambitions towards the World Cup. I believe that as we have passed the qualification for the European Championship, we will transfer it to the qualification for the world. I’m sure we have what it takes.
