The nimbus of artificial intelligence has just reached a new level, after it broke into the fashion industry and flashed its capabilities there as well in front of the eyes of researchers testing AI, because AI was able to recreate clothes with 95.7 percent accuracy during a breakthrough experiment.
The latest, successful experiment showed that artificial intelligence can recreate an arbitrary piece of clothing even if we only showed it a single image of the clothing in question. This would be a serious challenge even for a routine fashion designer. The interesting experiment was carried out with a two-stage artificial intelligence system known as Sewformer. The researchers trained the model with a total of 1 million images of clothes. It seems that training has paid off here, as in so many other areas.
Fashion Guru AI works by taking a look at an image and then essentially deconstructing the outfit to figure out where the different parts should fit and what cutting patterns to use to recreate it.
This could make clothes created by artificial intelligence more real than any previous attempt. According to the researchers, one of the significant areas of use of the system that can be seen even today is the application in virtual reality or the metaverse to dress up the characters. We can also see the design studios of the fashion industry, the virtual catwalk shows, the clothing design contests announced by the brands, not to mention the virtual clothes trials from anywhere during mobile shopping.
But back to the metaverse. The technology allows developers to recreate digital versions of clothes that exist in the physical world and then place them in the digital world, even as NFTs, although the market for the latter has shrunk quite a bit recently. Users can recreate their real clothes in the metaverse or try on new models, and of course, developers and fashion creators can ask for a fee for their products appearing in the digital world.
Of course, other possibilities arise in the field of clothing design created by artificial intelligence: for example, we can photograph someone wearing something, and then, after the AI has recreated it, new designs can be made from it, using only the original as a quasi starting point. It is not yet clear how exactly the researchers will proceed with the work they have started, or whether the Sewformer system will become widespread in the clothing industry. Still, it’s a great demonstration of what AI can do when given the right training and tools. The research material about the experiment can be read on the arXiv preprint servers.
