Terminating the prisoners’ air hour due to smoke bombs leads to unrest

In prison in Sittard, a group of detainees caused unrest this afternoon. The prisoners refused to enter after their air pause ended prematurely.

The prisoners were allowed to go outside for an hour, but that break came to an end after ten minutes because smoke bombs were thrown over the wall from the outside. The detainees had to return to their cells, but some of them refused. After an hour they still went inside.

The bombs have landed on the roof next to the airspace, prison spokesman Robert Meijer tells 1Limburg. “And if something is thrown over the wall, we follow protocol. That means the end of the air moment.”

Corona measures

Meijer confirms that a group of detainees refused to enter. “We started a conversation with that.” As far as we know, there was no question of riots or other violence.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus, many activities in prison have been scrapped. For example, visitors are not allowed and all leave is interrupted. Because of the measures, attempts have been made to bring contraband from outside over the wall into the establishment increased.

This has led to extra surveillance by the police at the prison. The airspace concerned has also been reduced by half.

In April, a protest in prison in Lelystad ended with pepper spray. According to the Ministry of Justice and Security, the prisoners did not agree with the day program. According to sources that RTL Boulevard spoke to, they rebelled against corona measures.
