Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (data map)
Overseas Network, July 24th According to a report by Japan’s Kyodo News on the 23rd, Japan’s Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) set an indicator for the discharge of nuclear polluted water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean, saying that the discharge of radioactive tritium will be suspended when the activity of tritium in the surrounding waters of the discharge port reaches a high value.
The target set by Tepco is that the tritium activity in the sea area near the discharge outlet within a radius of 3 kilometers of the nuclear power plant reaches 700 becquerels per liter of water, and the tritium activity in a 10-kilometer square on the side of the nuclear power plant facing the sea reaches 30 becquerels per liter of water.
According to the previous plan, TEPCO will use a large amount of seawater to dilute the nuclear-contaminated water so that the activity of tritium contained in it will be lower than one-fortieth of the national standard, that is, less than 1,500 becquerels per liter of water, and then it will be discharged about 1 km offshore through the subsea tunnel. Tepco said the index for suspending emissions was set in consideration of related equipment and the uncertainty of previous measurements.
Korean media previously reported that Japan insisted that nuclear-contaminated water is harmless after decontamination treatment. But this statement has been widely questioned by the international community, including the Japanese people. The scientific community is also generally concerned: more than 1.3 million tons of nuclear-contaminated water has been discharged. Even after decontamination treatment in Japan, it still contains more than 60 types of radionuclides. They will be concentrated in aquatic products such as fish, shrimp and shellfish.
