Tents set up on Randall’s Island for a temporary shelter

Mayor Eric Adams’ plan to house asylum seekers in tents on Randall Island has been implemented.

The tents were set up on Sunday at the new location after the mayor last week demolished his plan to house immigrants in Orchard Beach in the Bronx due to flooding and transportation problems.

Adams continues to face criticism from community leaders, elected officials and activists as Randall Island is also difficult to reach by public transport and has flood-prone sections.

The mayor says this location will be able to accommodate 500 asylum seekers and offer support services to immigrants.

Due to the high number of immigrants or asylum seekers arriving in the city in recent months, the mayor decreed a state of emergency last week regarding the migrant crisis.
