Informed sources from Ain Al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp near the city of Sidon, south Lebanon, confirmed the assassination of the official in the Fatah movement, Abu Ashraf Al-Armoushi, in an armed ambush, and two of his companions.
The Palestinian factions accuse the militant groups of carrying out the ambush.
A tense atmosphere prevails in Ain al-Hilweh, in light of the recent escalation, which was followed by intermittent clashes in the camp.
Earlier Sunday, Palestinian officials announced that one person was killed and 6 others were wounded following night clashes inside the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon.
The clashes took place in conjunction with the launch of a campaign by Palestinian factions in Ain al-Hilweh against extremist groups, and fugitives seeking refuge in the crowded neighborhoods of the camp.
The Palestinian officials, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, said the clashes erupted after an unidentified gunman attempted to assassinate another, Mahmoud Khalil, killing one of the latter’s associates.
The official National News Agency in Lebanon stated that 6 people were injured in the clashes, including two children.
A Lebanese soldier was wounded
In the same context, the Lebanese army announced, on Sunday, that one of its soldiers was injured, as a mortar shell fell from the camp clashes inside a military center.
The military said the soldier was wounded by shrapnel and was in stable condition.
The factions used rifles and rocket launchers inside the overcrowded camp, and ambulances were seen advancing through the camp’s narrow streets to transport the wounded to a hospital.
Most of the clashes have ceased, though state media reported that sporadic exchanges of fire still took place.
Due to the exchange of fire, many residents fled to neighboring neighborhoods inside the camp.
about the camp
Ain al-Hilweh camp is known for its lawlessness and occasional clashes. In 2017, Palestinian factions engaged in violent clashes for about a week with an armed organization affiliated with ISIS. The United Nations says about 55,000 people live inside the camp. Ain al-Hilweh camp was built in 1948 to host Palestinians who were displaced by Israeli forces, during its establishment in that year.
