Tensions Rise, Azerbaijan Closes Khamenei Representative Office in Baku

BAKUAzerbaijan on Tuesday (5/10/2021) closed the representative office of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in Baku. The closure comes as tensions between the two countries escalate.

“Azerbaijan authorities have closed the mosque and the office of Ali-Akbar Ojaghnejad,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency said in a statement, without providing further details.

Tensions between Tehran and Baku have risen over the past week.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev last week criticized Iran for holding military exercises near his country’s borders.

“Each country can carry out any military exercises on its own territory. That’s their sovereign right. But why now, and why at our borders?” Aliyev said in an interview published Monday (4/10/2021) by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu news agency.

In response, Iran said the drills near the border with Azerbaijan were “a question of sovereignty.”
