Polish truck drivers and farmers have blocked border checkpoints in recent months, complaining about what they say are unfair competition and agricultural imports from Ukraine. The blocking of the border has caused tension between Kyiv and Warsaw.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmyhals offered talks and visited the border today, but Poland did not send a representative. So far, lower-level talks have been held, but without success.
The head of Tusk’s office, Jan Grabec, said that the two sides are far from an agreement and so far no solution has been found that would satisfy Poland or Polish farmers. “Unfortunately, so far there is no offer from Ukraine that would allow us to hope to break the deadlock,” he added.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sent Shmyhal to the border in hopes of ending a standoff that he said has delayed the delivery of aid and weapons to Ukraine.
“Unfortunately, the Polish government officials did not come, but we publicly addressed them, presented our proposals and will continue this work,” declared Shmihals.
Asked why Polish officials had not arrived, the head of Tusk’s office said meeting at the border “doesn’t make sense right now.” “There are no mutually satisfactory solutions and it is not useful to hold a meeting to confirm that there is no compromise,” he added.
The Polish Prime Minister announced on Thursday that the two countries will hold talks in Warsaw on March 28 and that the ministers of the neighboring countries have been in contact.
