Tensions in Belarus: 633 protesters arrested, including opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova

Police in Minsk are investigating whether opposition leader Kolesnikova has been kidnapped. “We have certainly not arrested her,” the police themselves reported. But according to VRT journalist specialized in Eastern Europe Marijn Trio, that does not seem to be entirely correct. “The police denies that they have arrested Kolesnikova, but it still seems that they were the men of the Belarusian police or secret service,” Trio points out. “They have been driving around in vans without license plates for the past few weeks, wearing no uniform or badges and wearing balaclavas because they are afraid of being recognized.”

The United Kingdom and Germany are asking Belarusian President Alexandr Lukashenko to clarify the whereabouts of Belarusian opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova. They demand her immediate release if she is detained by the authorities.

Hours after the disappearance of 37-year-old opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova, uncertainty remains about her whereabouts.
