Last week, Russia confirmed that its military had successfully fired a simultaneous salvo of its Zircon hypersonic missile. Russia has previously carried out a number of successful tests of the Zircon hypersonic cruise missile.

However, this is the first time Russian authorities have reported successful simultaneous test launches of several Zircon missiles. Now, it looks like more launch details have surfaced.

Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed the weapon as part of a new generation of unrivaled weapons systems. He called it a “major event in the life of the country”.

He added that it was a substantial step in enhancing Russia’s defense capabilities.

Russia, the United States, France and China have all experimented with so-called hypersonic glide vehicles—defined as weapons that reach speeds of at least Mach 5.

The launch was confirmed amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine. During a 50-minute phone conversation with Biden on Thursday US time, Putin was threatened that Russia would face tough new sanctions if it harassed Ukraine.

“I explained to President Putin that if he makes another move, if he goes into Ukraine, we will have severe sanctions,” Biden told reporters as he left a Wilmington, Delaware restaurant.

“We will increase our presence in Europe, with our NATO allies, and there will be a price to pay for that.” Reuters, Saturday (1/1/2022).
