Union SG has done another bad thing in the play-offs. They lost at home against Club Brugge and are only third in the standings after a 0 out of 12. Blauw-zwart is doing a great job and is now two points behind Anderlecht. It could be a strange competition…
Union SG started the Champions’ Play-off with a 0 out of 9 and saw RSC Anderlecht take over the lead. Due to the Purple & White’s loss of points against Genk, Union was able to seize power again on matchday 4.
Then it had to get past Club Brugge, the culprit on the final match day last year. Blauw-zwart had received a boost from the victory in and against PAOK Saloniki and wanted to continue with that momentum. With a win they jumped on and over the people of Brussels and came within two points of leader Anderlecht.
Interesting first half without goals
At Union, Mac Allister was fit again after his hamstring injury and so he was finally allowed to start again, while Rasmussen and Lapoussin ensured that Teklab and Sadiki were moved to the bench. Thiago was preferred to Jutgla at Club Brugge, Mechele returned to the team and Balanta replaced the suspended Onyedika.
In a balanced first half, Club Brugge had possession of the ball, but Union SG perhaps had the best chances. Nilsson quickly made it 1-0, both teams excelled in kicking or heading balls. There was no lack of intensity, but in the zone of truth it was just not enough.
There were goals after the break, starting with a quick 0-1 via Vetlesen. He blocked a kick from goalkeeper Moris: it seemed illegal, but it is allowed. In any case, it looked bizarre. Vetlesen would then make himself noticed with a stupid second yellow card.
0 out of 12 for Union, Club Brugge is doing a great job!
And so Union got another half hour with one more man. It pressed on, but could never really leave its mark on the match. In fact: on the other side it was Meijer who made it 0-2 with a striking buffalo punch.
Ten minutes before the end, Puertas was able to return the favor with a beautiful free kick, but there was no equalizer. RSC Anderlecht remains the leader, with two points ahead of Club Brugge, three ahead of Union SG and four ahead of Genk. So will there be excitement and sensation in the next six matches?
