The warning from Russia was delivered by Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov.
“If, as they say, the comrades on the other side don’t understand, and things continue like that, we might, according to the logic of events, suddenly wake up and see ourselves in something similar,” he said, referring to the Ruda Crisis. In his opinion, if relations deteriorated to this extent, it would be a diplomatic failure, although he stressed that there was still time to try and reach an agreement on a solid basis. He voiced Moscow’s hope of receiving assurances that NATO would not expand its military forces closer to Russia’s borders.
“There is nothing but blackmail, threats, and sanctions in America’s foreign policy toolkit when it comes to Russia. But this is not the language we feel,” the diplomat said, adding that avoiding crossing Moscow’s red lines would save us from the danger of a “confrontational spiral”.
Ryabkov’s remarks came after Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke via video link with his US counterpart, Joe Biden, on Tuesday. According to a summary of the talks provided by the Kremlin, Moscow said it was very interested in getting assurances that there would be no further expansion of US troops into Eastern Europe and deployment of offensive attack weapons systems in countries bordering Russia.
Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov raised concerns last week, claiming that significant units and weaponry from NATO countries, including America and Britain, are being moved closer to Russia’s borders.

Concerns over the spread of atomic weapons in Europe have long been a point of contention for Russia.
