Thousands of people have gathered in Brussels to protest against the corona measures. According to an official count of the police there are 35,000 demonstrators on the leg. The protest started largely peacefully, but later the police were forced to deploy a water cannon and use tear gas, reports The last news.
The masses march through the Belgian capital in a procession, some demonstrators deviate from the route and then encounter the police. Here and there the police are pelted with fireworks.
The demonstrators have taken to the streets, as they say, to reclaim their freedom. They lack the scientific basis for some measures and believe that unvaccinated people are being demonized.
In Belgium, for example, from 1 January a vaccination obligation applies to healthcare employees and visitors to catering establishments must show a corona pass.
A reporter from the VRT who is on the scene says the organizers of the protest have called for it to be peaceful. In the run-up to the demonstration, there were fears in some media that things would get just as out of hand as in Rotterdam.
The police are massively present in the streets to steer the procession in the right direction. “The police are prepared, are consulting with the organizers and will take the necessary measures,” said a police spokesman in Brussels, according to Het Laatste Nieuws.
