The fatalities were between 89 and 91 years old and all three were in poor health, the city council reported on social media.
Approach no longer works
For a long time, China has had great success with its zero-covid policy. After the first months of the pandemic, the corona figures in the country remained very low for a long time. But with the emergence of the more contagious (but less deadly) omikron variant, the virus is more difficult to contain and more and more Chinese are becoming infected.
Tens of millions of people in other parts of the country also had to go into lockdown earlier this year.

Since March 10, 200 million tests have been carried out in Shanghai, on a population of 26 million, in an attempt to quell the most recent corona outbreak in the city. That still doesn’t work very well.
The city counted 22,248 new infections today. This makes Shanghai good for the vast majority of the confirmed corona infections in China. There were 23,460 new infections across the country, almost 3000 less than yesterday.
