Tens of Thousands of Indians Crowd the Ganges, Not Afraid of Omicron?

New Delhi

Tens of thousands of Hindus in India, led by the head of the temple and the hermits, gathered and followed the sacred rites at Ganges River. Residents continue to attend events that are part of this religious festival, even though India is facing a spike in cases corona virus (COVID-19) triggered by the highly contagious variant of Omicron.

As reported Associated PressOn Friday (14/1/2022), Hindu pilgrims gathered at Sangam, the confluence of three rivers — the holy Ganges, Yamuna and Saraswati — in the town of Prayagraj, 200 kilometers northeast of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh.

They participate in the Magh Mela festival, which is one of the holiest pilgrimage festivals in Hindu teachings.

Pilgrims bathe and bathe in the Ganges River, in a Hindu ritual believed to wash away sins and free them from the cycle of death and rebirth.

A similar moment at last year’s Hindu festival in the city of Haridwar, Uttarakhand, helped spread the Delta variant raging in India and made the country one of the worst-affected countries.

Epidemiologists have called the festival a ‘super-spreader event’.

The spread of Corona which is driven by the Omicron variant is reported to be increasing rapidly throughout India. The country reported more than 264,000 cases of Corona as of Friday (14/1) local time, but hospitalization rates remain relatively low.
