Tens of thousands of Belarusians took to the streets. Police used a water cannon against them

“An unauthorized assembly is taking place in the city center. The police are asking the participants of the event not to take part in the provocations and to disperse, “said the Belarusian Interior Ministry.

According to eyewitnesses, the Minsk police used water cannons in the Zamčyšča area against the demonstrators. A convoy with a water cannon is trying to push protesters out of the city center. Minsk police spokeswoman Natália Ganuševičová said that several people had been taken to the police station for investigation, Ria Novosti said.

Mass protests began in Belarus on August 9 immediately after the announcement of the results of the presidential election. The current president, Alexander Lukashenko, officially won them, but the opposition does not recognize the results and declares Sviatlana Cichanouska the winner.

Many other European countries, including the Czech Republic, sided with the opposition. On Friday, the European Union imposed sanctions on 40 Belarusian officials responsible for electoral manipulation and the violent repression of opposition demonstrations. Lukashenko is not among them.
