Tens of thousands of Americans fleeing Hurricane Ida: ‘This one will be worse than Katrina’

An evacuation order is in effect for the coastal areas of Louisiana. Many holidaymakers are also trying to get away, which led to long traffic jams on the highways yesterday, as can be seen in the images below:

Authorities report that Ida will become an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane, which could cause “life-threatening flooding” and “catastrophic wind damage.” Ida is also expected to be accompanied by gusty winds and downpours.

The governor of the state of Louisiana, whose largest city is New Orleans, warned that the hurricane may be the worst to hit the state since 1850. He declared a state of emergency and asked all residents to seek safe refuge by last night.

16 years after Katrina

Some experts even think Ida will gain weight over Katrina. That hurricane devastated much of New Orleans in 2005. The 1,833 deaths and more than $150 billion in damage were mainly caused by flooding, storm surge and massive rainfall. That is where the danger lies with Ida.

Weather models take into account a storm surge of up to 4.5 meters. And with 300 to 400 millimeters of rain in a short time, an amount that falls in the Netherlands on average in six months. But there is even a scenario that assumes more than 1000 millimeters of rain. There is also a chance that Ida will unexpectedly become more powerful than category 4.

President Biden has pledged assistance to states affected by the hurricane.
