Tens of thousands demonstrated at Christopher Street Day in Hamburg

Motto: “5 to 12! You & I against legal pressure”

HAMBURG. On Saturday (03.08.) tens of thousands of people took part in the Christopher Street Day (CSD) demonstration in Hamburg.
participated. Christopher Street Day commemorates June 28, 1969, when police stormed the New York gay and lesbian bar “Stonewall Inn” on Christopher Street, sparking protests by gays, lesbians and transsexuals that lasted several days. The CSD is intended to draw attention to the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, intersex and queer people. Since 1980, the CSD has also taken place in Hamburg every year. This year, the CSD demonstration started with 130 groups and numerous trucks on Mundsburger Damm. This year’s motto for the Hamburg CSD was “5 to 12! You and I against legal pressure”. This is no coincidence, explained Hamburg’s Deputy Mayor Katharina Fegebank (Greens), who also demonstrated. There is a strengthening of right-wing populist movements that are annoyed that everyone lives freely, equally and self-determined and that want to curtail and roll back the rights of queer people. The organizers of the CSD appealed to politicians to include the protection of queer people in the constitution.
