The first in the world tennis rankings, Novak Djokovic, expressed his concern about the prison sentence for his companion and former coach Boris Becker.
He was “shocked,” Djokovic told journalists in Madrid on Sunday, as reported by the Spanish sports newspaper “Marca” and other media. Becker was Djokovic’s coach for around three years between 2013 and 2016.
The 34-year-old Serb said he did not want to evaluate the verdict. But he emphasized: “Boris is a long-time friend and has contributed to my successes. I hope that he survives this without any consequences for his mental health and can resume his life.”
Becker (54) was sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a court in London on Friday for several bankruptcy offences. He has to serve half of this before he can spend the rest on probation in freedom, as the judge responsible decided. The man from Leimen was immediately taken into custody on Friday. He has almost a month to appeal the verdict.
