Stefanos Tsitsipas is two steps away from winning the Barcelona Open, after his very difficult victory over the Argentine Facundo Dias Acosta in the quarterfinals: 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8).
Tsitsipas found himself losing 2-5 in the tiebreak of the third set, but held on and won it 10-8. The 23-year-old Argentine (No. 46 in the World), who wasted two chances to seal the match, has never beaten a Top-10 opponent.
In Saturday’s semi-final, the in-form Tsitsipas – who is riding a nine-game winning streak on clay and hopes to climb to world No. 6 – will face France’s Arthur Fish or Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic.
Norway’s Kasper Ruud, a beaten finalist in the Monte Carlo Masters against the Greek champion last Sunday, will face Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry in the other semi-final in Barcelona.
The Barcelona tournament, where Tsitsipas has played two finals (the last one last year) without winning, is an ATP 500 tournament.
