Kitzbühel finalist Dominic Thiem is in the second round of a tennis Grand Slam for the first time since the Australian Open 2021 or after his wrist injury. The Lichtenwörther won on Monday at the start of the US Open against the number 25 seeded Kazakh Alexander Bublik 6: 3, 6: 2, 6: 4 and thus increased the head-to-head to 2: 0.
Thiem is about to advance to the third round against the American Ben Shelton or the Argentinian Pedro Cachin.
Thiem had been struck last week because of “a kind of gastritis” and therefore had to forego his appearance at the ATP tournament in Winston-Salem. At the weekend, however, the 29-year-old declared himself ready for the duel with the unorthodox playing Bublik. He then didn’t come into his own with his antics as desired, Thiem in turn kept his nerve and downplayed the game dryly. In the third set he had to concede a rebreak to his opponent, but then served out after 1:52 hours.
Parallel to the Thiem game, his “stable colleague” Sebastian Ofner began his US Open debut against the Portuguese Nuno Borges. After almost two hours of play, the score is 7:6(5),3:6,5:5. Julia Grabher from Vorarlberg, on the other hand, had to pull out of the competition against Wang Xiyu from China because of a wrist injury.
