Tennis: The turnaround: Mikael Ymer opens for return

The Swedish Tennis Association’s sporting director Simon Aspelin is positive about Mikael Ymer’s announcement:

– It is very pleasing news for Swedish tennis and for his own part, says Aspelin to SVT.

– At the moment, I interpret it as that he will make a hundred percent comeback and bet on getting back to the top 100, where he has been.

Aspelin is also captain of the Swedish David Cup team and would like to see Ymer in the squad when the suspension is over, as long as he follows the current rules. He hasn’t spoken to Ymer since the announcement, but wants to sit down with him as soon as possible.

– Of course we think it is very important that you stick to the existing rules, and I think it was very sad what happened to Micke. When you have served your punishment, I see that you are welcome to come back then for the Davis Cup team, says Aspelin.

“My conscience is clear”

It was in January 2022 that the International Tennis Federation accused Mikael Ymer of violating the doping rules, after missing three stay reports, a rule for the doping hunters to know where the athlete is. Ymer was acquitted by an independent jury,

But the International Tennis Federation appealed the case to Cas, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, in July 2022.

The International Tennis Federation called for two years, but Cas reduced the ban to 18 months.

Ymer then wrote on social media:

“I understand that these rules have been put in place to protect the sport, and that they are there for a reason. But I do not think that I violated these rules, and my conscience is clear with God as my witness.”

After the announcement, Ymer chose to give up tennis altogether.
