Tokyo (AP) – Two other tennis stars have canceled their starts at the Olympic tournament in Tokyo.
A week after his defeat in the final at Wimbledon against the Serb Novak Djokovic, the 25-year-old Italian Matteo Berrettini announced his resignation on Sunday. He was suffering from an injury on his left leg and had to take a few weeks off, the 25-year-old wrote via Instagram.
The American Coco Gauff will not compete in Japan either. The 17-year-old announced on Twitter that she had tested positive for Covid-19 and could not play in Tokyo.
Even before them, numerous prominent players had announced that they would not be at the Olympic tournament, including the Swiss Roger Federer, the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, the Austrian Dominic Thiem, the American Serena Williams and the Kieler Angelique Kerber. The world number one Djokovic, on the other hand, is at the start. The tennis competitions in the Japanese capital begin next Saturday.
