The Incident
Francesca Jones, the 24-year-old British tennis star, experienced a frightening episode Tuesday at the Copa Colsanitas tournament in Colombia. The incident occurred during her Round of 32 match against Julia Riera of Argentina.

Medical staff and Riera quickly assisted Jones, placing her in a wheelchair. She was subsequently forced to retire from the match.
Jones Explains Possible Cause
Jones addressed the situation in a post to her Instagram Stories on wednesday, attributing the collapse to a combination of factors, including travel fatigue and the high altitude of Bogota.
After winning the event in Brazil on Sunday, our total trip took over 24 [hours], with minimal rest and recovery from a long week. Bogota is renowned for its altitude, and often takes a few days to adapt. Unfortunately upon our arrival Monday afternoon we were unable to practice due to rain and this meant that aside from my low-level pre match warm up, my frist exposure to the limited oxygen levels at a high intensity was my match.
Bogota, situated at an elevation of approximately 8,600 feet (2,600 meters), presents a meaningful challenge for athletes unaccustomed to the reduced oxygen levels. acclimatization typically requires several days, and the lack of practice time exacerbated the issue for Jones.
She further elaborated on the physical effects she experienced during the match:
As the match went on, I worked hard to give myself the prospect to stay competitive while trying to get used to the conditions but progressively struggled; blurry vision eventually leading to collapsing, with no cramp having occurred.
Medical Assessment and Future Plans
Following the incident, Jones underwent medical testing. She reported that her heart worked a little too hard
but assured fans that there were no long-term concerns.
Despite the setback, Jones expressed her fondness for the Bogota tournament and her intention to return in 2026. She also stated her commitment to continuing her season after a period of rest.
Bogota is one of my favorite events of the year and I hope to reconnect in 2026 under different circumstances. After a few days rest, I will continue to build on the improvements made to date this season. thank you for the messages and concern.
