Tennis – Serena Williams’ rookie cards sell for record prices

The collector card market is lucrative. Whether it’s Pokémon cards or famous athletes, rare pieces in perfect condition can sometimes be snapped up at exorbitant prices. This is the case of those of Serena Williams which were acquired for respectively 117,000 and 96,000 dollars.

With this sale, the cards bearing the image of the winner of 39 Grand Slam titles have become the most expensive in history for a female athlete. The previous record was held by the American football player Mia Hamm with an amount of 35,000 dollars.

However, these sums remain far from those at which the cards of certain male athletes are sold. In July 2021, a card of Stephen Cury, the Golden State Warriors star, was sold for 5.9 million. A few months earlier that of LeBron James when he was young had found a taker for 5.2 million.
