Tennis: scheduled tournaments in China and Japan canceled due to pandemic – LINFO.re

The women’s tennis circuits, the WTA and ATP, announced Thursday, July 1, the cancellation of tennis tournaments that are scheduled in Asia, China and Japan, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Asian major tournaments canceled

The cancellation of tennis tournaments in Asia follows concerns related to the coronavirus and also travel restrictions imposed in China and at Japan. The WTA and theATP announced in two different press releases that theChina Open in Beijing and theJapan Open in Tokyo were canceled with the exception of the Masters, reports Le Figaro.

But the WTA indicated that the status of the Masters, which brings together all the best players, is under discussion. If this tournament was maintained, it would be held in the city of Shenzhen, located in southern China.

Possible continuation of the Shanghai Masters-1000

For its part, theATP said the Shanghai Masters-1000 could be held in October, the week before the one in Indian Wells, Calif., scheduled for October 10-17.

Steve Simon, Managing Director of WTA, wished to declare: “We are disappointed that our global events in China and Japan are not taking place this year.”
