Andrea Petkovic wants to subordinate her tennis career to all other professional plans while she is still active. The 33-year-old girl from Darmstadt emphasized this in an interview published by the “Berliner Morgenpost” on Wednesday. The former top ten player recently published a highly acclaimed book and presented the ZDF “sports report” several times.

“Tennis remains my absolute priority as long as I play. Everything else will be put on the back burner for the time being,” said Petkovic. The 102nd in the world rankings has decided to stay professional for another year after only being able to complete one official match due to injuries and the 2020 corona pandemic. At the French Open she lost in the first round in September.

“With my knee cartilage damage, I have to concentrate on individual events, I can no longer play the crowd,” said Petkovic, who would like to qualify for the Olympic Games postponed to 2021. “Maybe I’ll play a tournament really well – and then it’ll work out,” she said.

Petkovic sees a merger of the professional organizations ATP and WTA as a possible opportunity in the crisis. In a crisis we are stronger together. “That’s why the Grand Slams were almost the only tournaments that worked flawlessly, because all the organizations have to get together,” said Petkovic.
