The next opponent of two-time Wimbledon winner Kvitová will be another American, Shelby Rogers, the 93rd player in the world, in New York.
“The whole match was of a good standard. We played nicely. I knew she was a great fighter, and I tried to push her, push and push her and wait for the opportunity to attack. At key moments, the service helped me, which I am happy for,” said Kvitová .
Thirty-year-old Kvitová played a great ending set in the evening match at Arthur Ash’s stadium. In both, she went to a break at 5: 3. Although she subsequently lost service in the first set, she got the introductory act immediately after Pegula’s double mistake. She had already delivered the second set, and after an hour and twenty-three minutes she used the first match ball.
In the second set, Kvitová initially lost 0: 2 and 0:30 in her serve. At 2: 2, she then averted two breakballs. “I fought to get back in the game. The two or three games were breaking. Then I felt better,” said Kvitová.
Coach Jiří Vaňek’s ward is at the US Open for the sixth time in the round of 16. The furthest in Flushing Meadows was twice in the quarterfinals.
Serb Novak Djokovic remains undefeated this season. The highest player scored the 26th victory of the year in a match against the German Jan Lennard Struff, whom he defeated without problems 6: 3, 6: 3 and 6: 1 in an hour and three quarters.
