Petra Kvitová at the tournament in Melbourne.
Two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitová had a free draw at the beginning of the tournament, in the second round she eliminated the famous American veteran Venus Williams after a big battle. He will face the last semifinalist Roland Garros Podoroska for the first time in his career.
Karolína Plíšková, as the tournament trio, also had the first round free, then she defeated the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto. She will also face her next opponent, the 46th player in the world, Danielle Collins from the USA, for the first time in her career.
Markéta Vondroušová has already advanced to the quarterfinals, defeating Russia Věra Zvonareva 7: 6, 6: 7, 6: 4. On the other hand, Marie Bouzková finished after a defeat with the home world number one Ashleigh Barty 0: 6, 6: 4, 3: 6.
Vondroušová needed three hours without five minutes to defeat Zvonareva. In the first set, she did not let her thirty-six-year-old opponent finish in the 5: 6 set, in the tie-break she decided to start at 5: 0 and won it with a ratio of 7: 4.
In the second set, however, she lost the tie-break 4: 7. In the decisive set, both players had trouble maintaining service, Vondroušová lost it three times, but took Zvonareva’s service four times and advanced.
For the first time in her career, Bouzková stood up to the current world number one and in the first set she received a “canary” in 32 minutes. But then she leveled the game, took the opponent’s service to 3: 2 and kept the lead. In the third set, the Czech Republic leveled from 1: 3 to 3: 3 and had a breakball, but the Australian defended the serve and brought the match to a victorious end.
“It was a very decent match,” Barty said on the court. “She will return a lot of returns and force you to work hard every service. I tried to get some easier points when I could, and I’m glad I managed it in the end,” she said.

Barbora Krejčíková entered the Grampians Trophy preparatory tournament in Melbourne by winning 6: 4, 4: 6, 6: 4 over Lauren Davis from the USA. Barbora Strýcová, on the other hand, lost to her American opponent, defeating Bethanie Matteková-Sands 7: 6, 6: 2 in the battle of the elite deblists.
The tournament was included at the last minute in the calendar for players who, after arriving in Australia due to infected fellow passengers on the plane, had to leave in strict isolation without the possibility of leaving the hotel room for training.
Twenty-five-year-old Krejčíková managed the opening match of the tournament, just like a month ago during her seasonal debut in Abu Dhabi. She won the three-hundredth battle with Davis in two and a half hours, and in the second round Jelena Rybakinová from Kazakhstan awaits her, who, as a four, had a free lot at the start.
Thirty-four-year-old Strýcová fought a year older Mattek-Sands in singles for the first time in her career. For both of them, today’s debut was the first match of the season, the Czech fedcup champion last played at an indoor tournament in Ostrava last October.
The third Czech tennis player in the tournament is Kateřina Siniaková, who plays in the first round with former world number one Angelique Kerberová from Germany.
Muchová is also in the quarterfinals
Karolína Muchová will play in the Gippsland Trophy in the Melbourne quarterfinals. The eighth player in the third round defeated the Italian Jasmine Paolini in two hours 6: 2, 4: 6 and 6: 4.
Twenty-four-year-old Muchová made twelve aces along the way. Several of them helped to avert breaks, as in the last game of the match. In the third set, she lost only four points in her own service.
To advance to the semifinals, Mucha will play with the winner of the match between Kaia Kanepi from Estonia and Russia’s Darja Kasatkin.
Veselý escaped from two matchwords and won
In the second round of the Murray River Open, Jiří Veselý deflected two match points and defeated the fifth seed Casper Ruud from Norway in sets 5: 7, 7: 6 and 6: 3 in two and three-quarters of an hour. In a duel for the quarterfinals, he will face Lithuanian player Ričardas Berankis in Melbourne.
After losing the first set, Veselý, who plays with his left hand, lost 0: 3 in the second, but equalized to 3: 3. At 5: 6 he faced two match points and each time he stayed in the match thanks to the winning forehand. He won the third set by winning the tie-break 7: 4.
In the decisive set of the duel of the former best juniors in the world, Veselý won the key break in the eighth game and ended the duel with a winning gamble with a clean gamble during his serve. He helped to win 14 aces and 26 successful volley.
