Jan-Lennard Struff has reached the round of 16 of the ATP tournament in New York. The 30-year-old beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7: 6 (7: 4), 3: 6, 6: 4 and made it into the round of 16 at the Western and Southern Open. There Struff meets the Belgian David Goffin.
Struff and Shapovalov met at eye level over long distances. After winning the tie-break, the world number 34. in the second set a little behind and took the balance. In the last set it looked like another tie-break for a long time, then Struff managed the decisive break to 6: 4.
The Western and Southern Open usually take place in Cincinnati, but due to the pandemic, they will be played in New York until the end of the week this year. In the coming week, the US Open will start there as the first Grand Slam after the forced Corona break.
