Tennis – Naomi Osaka wins the opening match in New York confidently – Sport

New York (AP) – Tennis superstar Naomi Osaka has won her opening match at the US Open against the Czech Marie Bouzkova.

The defending champion won in New York in two sets with 6: 4 and 6: 1 against the 87th in the world rankings. Osaka had to fend off several breakballs right at the beginning, but was able to score the decisive points and gained security in the second set.

For the 23-year-old, it’s the sixth US Open – before 2020, she was the first Japanese woman to win the Grand Slam in New York in a historic triumph in 2018. This year she is placed on three – behind the world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia and Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus.

In an intense opening match, veteran tennis star Andy Murray forced co-favorite Stefanos Tsitsipas into the fifth set at the US Open. After almost five hours, however, the 23-year-old Greek defeated the Scots (34) with 2: 6, 7: 6 (9: 7), 3: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 4. Tsitsipas has never made it past the third round at the US Open, but is placed on three after favorite Novak Djokovic from Serbia and the Russian Daniil Medvedev – the German Olympic champion Alexander Zverev follows on four. Tsitsipas meets Adrian Mannarino from France in the second round.
