For Daniil Medvedev, his first tournament as number one in the world rankings ended earlier than hoped.
The top seeded Russian failed at the ATP Masters in Indian Wells, California, in his second match after jumping to the top of the computer rankings with a 6: 4, 3: 6, 1: 6 on the French veteran Gael Monfils and thus missed the round of 16.
Indian Wells: Daniil Medvedev loses world number one
It is already clear that Medvedev will be replaced as world number one by his Serbian predecessor Novak Djokovic next Monday after only three weeks. Medvedev had ousted Djokovic from first place at the end of February.
The Serb is not at the start in Indian Wells because the 34-year-old has still not been vaccinated against the corona virus and was therefore not allowed to enter the USA.

Due to the changing of the guard, none of the “big four” – Djokovic, Rafael Nadal (Spain), Roger Federer (Switzerland) and Andy Murray (Great Britain) – were at the top for the first time since 2004.
