World number one Daniil Medvedev is about to win his first tournament of the year.
The 26-year-old Russian won his semi-finals at the ATP tournament in Los Cabos, Mexico, against Miomir Kecmanovic from Serbia 7: 6 (7: 0), 6: 1 and will now face three-seeded British player Cameron Norrie in the final.
“It was a very tough game,” said Medvedev after the game against Kecmanovic: “He started great and the whole first set was at a great level. So many difficult points, so many points where I felt I had to push myself to the limit.” With his fourth participation in the final in 2022, it is also clear that Medvedev will tackle his title defense project at the US Open, which begins at the end of the month, as number one.
Rublev with a successful double shift
Medvedev was not allowed to serve at the classic lawn in Wimbledon due to the sanctions against Russian professionals, but he will again be one of the favorites at the fourth Grand Slam of the year in New York from August 29th. Last year, Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic in the final there and celebrated the first Grand Slam success of his career.
In Washington, meanwhile, Andrei Rublev reached the semifinals after a successful double shift. The top seeded Russian defeated Americans Maxime Cressy and JJ Wolf in a day and now meets Yoshihito Nishioka.
Kyrgios with 35 aces
“I didn’t spend much time on the court,” Rublev said of his three hours on the court: “That was the main key today.” The number eight in the world first defeated Cressy 6: 4, 7: 6 (10: 8) in one hour and 42 minutes and needed 78 minutes for the subsequent 6: 2, 6: 3 against Wolf.
Australia’s Nick Kyrgios and Sweden’s Mikael Ymer will face off in the second semi-final in Washington. Wimbledon finalist Kyrgios served 35 aces in the 6: 7 (5: 7), 7: 6 (14:12), 6: 2 against the Americans Frances Tiafoe.
