in one BBC Breakfast TV interview tennis legend Boris Becker spoke again about his time in a British prison. Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in London at the end of April 2022 because he had concealed assets worth millions from his insolvency administrators.
Now the 55-year-old has given the BBC an interview in which he described his time in prison as “very brutal”. “It was very brutal, a very, very different experience from what you see on TV and hear in stories.”
Boris Becker fought “every day to survive”.
He quickly learned that he needed protection and had to surround himself with “tough guys”. “You fight to survive every day.” Nevertheless, Becker can also see positive aspects of the time behind bars.
The experience made him tougher. “I’m a survivor, I’m a tough dog,” Becker said in the brief interview, “if anything, that made me a better, stronger man.”
In mid-December, Becker was released in England after 231 days behind bars. The reason for the early release was a special regulation for foreign prisoners.
However, Becker must continue to cede part of his income to the insolvency administrator. In addition, he is not allowed to return to his adopted country of Great Britain for the time being. He misses Great Britain and especially Wimbledon, says Becker.
