Tennis: Czech princesses in New York

Barbora Krejčíková

Barbora Krejčíková continues her 2021 odyssey in a rather breathtaking fashion. After winning the Strasbourg tournament, she triumphed at Roland Garros in singles AND doubles and then won doubles gold at the Tokyo Olympics. Currently ninth in the world – her best ranking so far – she will face Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (WTA 2) this Tuesday evening for a place in the last four.

Her round of 16 was a bit laborious and she will probably not go on vacation with Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza, who accused her after her loss of behaving in an “unprofessional” manner, due to a long medical break and a certain slowness to set up between the points.

The Czech said after her victory that she felt bad on the court, with dizziness and difficulty breathing.

For her part, her compatriot Karolína Plíšková continues her quest for the holy grail: after another lost final at Wimbledon, the one who is currently number 4 in the WTA rankings is still looking for a first Grand Slam title.

Following her victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the eighth, the Czech was confident despite the absence of her German coach Sascha Bajin, who was unable to obtain a visa for the United States.

Karolina Pliskova:

“It’s a little frustrating that Sascha can’t be here, but I stay well surrounded so I feel good, on and off the court. I don’t always play my best tennis but I manage to have fun and in addition I have accumulated several victories in recent weeks so I have less pressure on my shoulders. It helps me to play better and above all it feels good to be able to play again in front of the public, which was not the case here last year. I like signing autographs every now and then! “

Karolína Plíšková will face Greece’s Maria Sakkari on Wednesday, who beat Petra Kvitová in the third round.

The Czech players are also still present in the doubles table, with Marie Bouzková and Lucie Hradecká playing in the quarter-finals against the Canadian-Brazilian pair composed by Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani.
