Tennis: Coco Gauff is the highest earner among sports stars

For two decades, the tennis trio Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Naomi Osaka fought for the title of the highest-paid athletes in the world. Williams and Sharapova have since resigned, and Osaka recently took a year-long break after the birth of her daughter Shai. Nevertheless, one tennis star will still earn the most in 2023.

According to “Sportico”, Coco Gauff earned the equivalent of 19.83 million Swiss francs in 2023, making the 19-year-old the absolute top earner in the sports world. The US high-flyer earned 5.85 million francs on the tennis court, 2.62 million of which came from her triumph at the US Open. She even made almost 14 million francs from advertising deals.

Even behind Gauff, the tennis cracks dominate the money rankings. Nine of the 15 highest-earning female sports stars are tennis players. Behind Gauff, Polish world number 1 Iga Swiatek is in second place with 19.16 million francs. The first non-tennis player follows in third place. The Chinese/American ski freestyler Eileen Gu only earned 23,000 francs in bonuses from her sport in 2023, but earned 17.47 million francs from sponsorship contracts.

By the way: The Forbes list of the highest-earning athletes came out in May. At the top is Cristiano Ronaldo with 118.95 million francs, closely followed by Lionel Messi with a good 113.7 million.
