Tennis, Camila Giorgi in the final in Montreal

First time in a WTA1000 for the Italian n.71 in the ranking, on the rise since last June. Between Camila and the title there is still Pliskova, like at the Olympics

It doesn’t stop anymore, Camila Giorgi! The 29-year-old Italian tennis player hits yet another great result of this 2021 and flies to the final in the WTA tournament in Montreal, the first 1000 of her career. It takes another battle of over two hours to get the better of Jessica Pegula in three sets, 6-3 3-6 6-1 the final score.

MISTAKES AND MISCELLANEOUS

Giorgi is better in the first set, always in control (4-1 and then 5-2) apart from some problems with the serve, which will cost her dearly in the second set, that of the pride reaction of Pegula who seems to escape until 3 -0, before Camila – as already done with the Gauff – reassembles touching the hook. In the game that could be worth 4-4, however, the blue is lost in a double double fault and the American runs away. The effort is such that in the third and decisive set Pegula places the initial break and nothing else: Giorgi places a series of accelerations that disorient the opponent and allow her to quickly reach 4-1. Pegula cancels three more break points, but with a double fault he ends up giving the Italian the fifth consecutive game and the possibility of serving for the match.

MAGIC MOMENT

Camila is playing a great tournament: she eliminated the Belgian Mertens (# 16) at her debut and ninth seeded, in the second round the Argentine Podoroska (# 38), in the second round the Czech Kvitova (# 12) , then in the quarters the rematch against Gauff (# 24), 15th seeded. Now the ninth final in his career, the first in a WTA1000, where the blue arrives with only one set left on the road.

STILL PLISKOVA

To contend for the title will be the Czech Karolina Pliskova, n.6 in the ranking and fourth-seeded, who won 6-3 6-4 on the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the n.1 of the scoreboard. Pliskova returns to Giorgi’s path just over two weeks from the direct clash of the Tokyo Olympics, where Camila won 6-4 6-2 in the match that offered the quarter-finals. In the Italian night, another company will be needed.
