A slip with serious consequences. Belinda Bencic has to give up the final game in Berlin in the second set due to injury. The trembling for Wimbledon begins.

Belinda Bencic (25) was denied the traditional victory jump into the nearby Hundekehlesee. The Swiss woman has to endure an unpleasant kind of cooling down in Berlin. When the score was 3: 5 in the first set of the final against Ons Jabeur (27), the Swiss slipped on the grass surface, twisted her left foot unhappily and fell to the ground as if struck by lightning.
Bad memories of Alexander Zverev’s horror injury during the French Open semifinals are awakened. However, Bencic gets up, is treated – her foot is cooled – and actually continues to play.
Bencic is still satisfied
Shortly thereafter, the ailing Swiss lost the first round, in which she was already 3-0 down after nine minutes. Giving up is out of the question for the world No. 17 – at least for now. She wins the first service game in the second set. Hope burgeons, which is finally shattered in the third game. Bencic waves the white flag and has to congratulate her Tunisian opponent on her fourth tournament win at the WTA level.
Nothing is known about the severity of the ankle injury. What is positive from a Swiss point of view: In the field interview, the tennis ace already seems composed again. “I’m still satisfied with my week,” she says. While Jabeur elegantly jumps into the Hundekehlesee in the course of the evening, Bencic is worried about participating in the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon, which starts in a week. Previously, the eastern Swiss would have been registered for the tournament in Bad Homburg. It can be doubted whether the Olympic champion will appear there.
