London (AP) – The tennis world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia moved into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time in her career. The 25-year-old beat French Open winner Barbora Krejcikova from the Czech Republic in London 7: 5, 6: 3.
For Krejcikova, who had recently triumphed surprisingly in Paris, it was the first defeat after 15 wins. In the close match, Barty was the more consistent player overall. It is not yet clear who the 2019 French Open winner will meet on Tuesday. Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic, who was formerly number one in the world rankings, also reached the quarter-finals.
Djokovic without any problems
The five-time tournament winner Novak Djokovic is among the last eight players in a Grand Slam tournament for the 50th time in his career. The world number one from Serbia defeated the number 17 seeded Chilean Cristian Garín 6: 2, 6: 4, 6: 2 in the round of 16. Djokovic’s next opponent on Wednesday is Marton Fucsovics. US talent Sebastian Korda did not make it into the quarter-finals on his 21st birthday. The son of the former Czech world-class professional Petr Korda lost in the fifth set after 3:49 playing time 8:10 against Russian Karen Khachanov. The Canadian Denis Shapovalov won 6: 1, 6: 3, 7: 5 against the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, who had previously eliminated the German professional Dominik Koepfer, and will meet Chatschanow on Wednesday.
