MELBOURNE (Reuters) – Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said on Monday that players attending the tournament this month will not have to be tested for the novel coronavirus, revealing he will allow play even if it tests positive.
Tyree said the policy reflected the domestic situation. Compared to the past two years, when stringent infection control measures were implemented, the measures will be significantly relaxed. The 2021 tournament took place inside a “bubble” and was played without spectators for several days due to the spread of the virus.
Last year, Novak Djokovic (Serbia), who won the tournament nine times in total, was expelled from Australia because he hadn’t been vaccinated against the new coronavirus.
Mr Tyree asked: ‘If you are unwell, please self-isolate’ and said: ‘Medical staff will continue to monitor.’
