Tennis – ATP – Rafael Nadal: “Novak is best placed in the race for the Grand Slams”

At 36, he has just achieved what he had never done before in his brilliant career. Halfway through the season, Rafael Nadal won the first two Grand Slam tournaments of the year: the Australian Open and Roland-Garros. From the top of his 22 Majors, he now measures Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who have 20 each, from above. So much so that he can even dream of a feat that no one has accomplished for more than half a century (1969): the calendar Grand Slam.-

After all, the Mallorcan is halfway there. So does he believe he is capable of achieving the feat? “It’s crazy. No one has done it since Rod Laver. Djokovic came closest last year (he failed in a victory of the goal in the final of the US Open against Daniil Medvedev, editor’s note). More than achieving the Grand Slam, I would already be happy if I could play all four this year“, he tempered during an interview granted in a large Parisian hotel to the ATP site.

Nadal’s toughest, Swiatek’s most spectacular: the 10 stats that made Roland 2022

Novak has no physical issues and is playing at a spectacular level

And for good reason, after his triumph at the Porte d’Auteuil, Nadal was overtaken by his chronic pain in his left foot (Müller-Weiss syndrome) that the infiltrations had put to sleep during the fortnight. The Majorcan knows that the situation is not viable for him in the medium term and is looking for a solution to prolong his career. He also received his first radio frequency treatment in Barcelona before returning to Mallorca on crutches on Tuesday.-

Nothing therefore says that the Spaniard will indeed be present at Wimbledon in less than three weeks to continue his quest. But has he made the definitive break in the race for the Grand Slams. Again, Nadal refuses to come forward. Surely because he knows that the lawn of the All England Club has become the preserve of Djokovic who has won the last three editions of the English Major (2018, 2019 and 2021, the tournament having been canceled in 2020, editor’s note).

Everything can happen. Novak is clearly in the best position to break the record because he has no physical issues, and he is playing at a spectacular level. Federer has been out for a long time and you can always expect something special from him, but we all know how hard it is to come back, especially at 40. We will see what will happen. Like I’ve always said, I didn’t mind when we were tied, and it’s the same now that I have two more. I just wanna keep playing“, he concluded.
