Author of 35 aces in a first round where he had saved nine break points out of nine against Frances Tiafoe, Stanislas Wawrinka was not as hard-hitting on his play against Pedro Martinez. He thus lost his engagement twice, the second while serving for the match 6-4 5-3.
The Vaudois, who won 90% of the points behind his first ball but only 33% behind the second, nevertheless mastered his subject. He was able to keep his guard to avoid any unpleasant surprises, although he could also have more easily won a first set in which he missed two double break balls at 4-1.
