Today, on November 25, in Vienna, after the European Handball Federation (EHF) European Cup 3rd round draw, the team of Dobele “Tenax” opponents was determined in the continuation of this tournament. This year, in the EHF European Cup, Dobel players will meet with the Russian handball club “Neva SPb”.
“Neva SPb” is a team from St. Petersburg, which is currently in the second place in the table of the Russian handball super league tournament with a total of 11 games, of which nine have won, but two games have been tied.
This team last won the title of champion of the Russian handball super league in 1993, but in the last decade it has won the second place five times, and in the last three years it has steadily taken the third place in this league.
Last year, Neva SPb in St. Petersburg made it to the top 16 teams in the EHF European Cup (then called the Challenge Cup). In 2018/2019, it managed to reach the semi-finals, but lost to the Bucharest “CSM” team. Neva SPb has also spent four seasons (from 2010 to 2013) in the EHF Champions League.
Sandris Veršakovs, the head coach of Dobele “Tenax”, comments on the opponent as follows: “In the draw we have a strong opponent, but it is nothing – we will prepare, train and go to fight.” Continuing, Verkhakov notes: “At the moment, the most important thing is to plan a safe trip for our athletes, because we will immediately play the first game away.”
The first games will take place on December 12 and 13, when Dobel players will go to Russia. The answer games in Dobele will follow a week later. Round 3 of this tournament will feature a total of 32 teams and matches in 16 pairs to determine the top 16 teams that will continue the tournament. In this round, the eight best teams of last year also joined the lottery, which according to the results of the previous year had a road sign to the 3rd round of the tournament.
We have already announced that on September 28, a decision was officially made to cancel the 2nd round of the EHF European Cup between Dobele “Tenax” and Finland’s IFK “Helsinki”. Due to restrictions in Finland, the match could not take place. The cancellation of the games meant that Dobele’s “Tenax” automatically entered the 3rd round.
