Ten years of Twitter @Polizei_KL

The Kaiserslautern Police Department published its first report on Twitter ten years ago, on October 23, 2012. Johannes Freundorfer, then employed at the Kaiserslautern Altstadtrevier, is the author of this tweet:

#Soccer #Kaiserslautern #Police #FCK Dear fans, the police will inform you shortly about football operations in KL! Soon!

After various assignments with the Rhineland-Palatinate police, including as head of the task force at the police headquarters of the West Palatinate police, Freundorfer is now in charge of the police inspection of Ludwigshafen 2. He recalls: “So, the 1. FC Kaiserslautern was playing against FC Hansa Rostock and I asked my inspector Thomas Kossurok if we didn’t want to report on the police action surrounding the game on social media. ” “That was almost the birth of the Kaiserslautern police department’s Twitter account.”

At that time Freundorfer was completing a master’s degree at the Chair of Criminology, Criminal Studies and Police Sciences with the social scientist Prof. Dr. Thomas Feltes in Bochum. In this context, he intensely addressed the theme of “football and violence”.

Thomas Kossurok transported the idea directly to Elmar May in Mainz via Franz-Josef Brandt, who was then head of department in Kaiserslautern. The project has been approved and has been given the green light. In October 2012, Johannes Freundorfer tweeted about what was likely the first official iPad at the West Palatinate police headquarters. From his stay he announced: “#football #Kaiserslautern #police #FCK Dear fans, the police will shortly inform you about football operations in KL! See you soon!” The first tweets and game days were characterized by great media attention. Representatives of the press, secretaries of state and speakers were interested in this police communication medium. Consequently, Freundorfer wrote his dissertation on the pilot project “Tactical Communication in Social Media”. Originally a “football channel”, the Kaiserslautern police Twitter account now has more than 19,700 followers. For a long time now, the police have not just tweeted about football. The portfolio ranges from traffic information to searches and alerts to nationwide campaigns. “Twitter has become an important means of communication for us because we can reach many people very quickly,” says press spokesman Bernhard Christian Erfort.

Deputy Press Director Christiane Lautenschläger was there from the start: “A few years ago the Rhineland-Palatinate police hired online editors because they recognized the importance of communication in social media and the digital world as a whole. . Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube or the classic website: nowadays people communicate anytime, anywhere. Every medium is different and has different target groups. To reach as many people as possible, we are present on these platforms “.

Diana Eilenz has been an online editor at the West Palatinate Police Headquarters for two years and knows: “We can easily reach people on Twitter and other social networks. You will receive our news directly on your mobile, smartwatch, tablet or computer. Our followers can get first-hand information from the police anytime, wherever they are. You will receive important information and tips from us. It goes without saying that among the many serious topics there is also room for a smile or a wink “.

While the national police channels on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube are now managed by the “Social Media Coordination Office” at the State Criminal Police, the Twitter channels are still in the hands of individual presidencies. The press office is working to cross the “20k” threshold, or 20,000 followers, for the Kaiserslautern police account. A small video is in preparation to celebrate this next milestone.
