READ.ID – Ten newborns died in a large fire in a hospital in Maharashtra, the richest state in India, Saturday (9/1/2020).
The country’s leading politicians also expressed their condolences at the loss of the babies’ lives.
“The fire broke out at 02.00 am (03.30 WIB) today,” said Pramod Khandate, civil surgeon at the Bhandara District General Hospital in Maharashtra. Reuters.
At the time of the incident, 17 children were being treated in the hospital’s infant care unit. Seven of them were rescued, while 10 others died in the incident.
The Chief Minister (Governor) of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thakre, has ordered an investigation into the fire. Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, expressed his condolences for the tragedy.
“A heartbreaking tragedy in Bhandara, Maharashtra, where we lost a precious young life,” Modi tweeted on Twitter.
“My thoughts are on all the bereaved families. I hope the injured recover as soon as possible, “he said.
A number of other politicians, including opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, also expressed their sorrow.
