The new edition of Vocabulary of health and medicine, published in December 2020, is a response to an ongoing challenge: adapting the French language to the events shaking our century. It’s not just about the pandemic, but “Also in the health sector in its most everyday aspects, as well as developments in the fields of food, innovation or even societal issues”.
Our lexical field is constantly evolving. “These changes do not go without an enrichment of the language, which necessarily accompanies the appearance of new realities and new concepts”, specify the three ministers who prefaced the book (Élisabeth Borne, Minister of Labor, Roselyne Bachelot, Minister of Culture, and Olivier Véran, Minister of Solidarity and Health).
The stakes are high: many words related to health did not have a French equivalent on the international scene. The General Delegation for the French language and the languages of France relied on a language enrichment commission to translate 247 words from English to French.
